FOS - Please tell us a bit about yourself.
DJ, Producer, Digital artist and now in to Tattoos

FOS - How did you discover electronic music?
I discovered electronic music in early 90’s I think.

FOS - Who was your biggest inspiration? And has he influenced your music in any way?
There is no specific person who inspires me, because I am in to various styles of music, artist who belongs to that category inspires me in all the way.

FOS - What do you enjoy most about music production?
I love the fact that while production one has to organize all random sounds in to one rhythm, in order for people to relate and groove.

FOS - What is the best thing about your profession?
Playing music, travelling and always meeting new people who appreciate the music played.

FOS - Do you get excited or nervous before your gigs, how do you handle bloopers if any?
Nervous …hmm not really, excited yesa lot , if it is a new place.

FOS - How much time do you spend on music on any given day?
More than 7 to 8 hours, depends…

FOS - Who do you look at as an icon or symbol within the Electronic Music Scene ?If you could collaborate with any artist out right now who would it be?
There are lots who can be my icon but to name few I would love to work with photek, squarepusher, rajaram, talvin singh, earthtribe, ajja etc, hahaha, this list won’t stop.

FOS - You have had quite a rapid rise to the top, what were your big breaks and what advice can you give to Djs looking to make the breakthrough?
I played in some music festival like beyond spirit, electro holi and also did some gigs in well known places in Mumbai and goa.
Advice - Believe in your music

FOS - What do you think is going to separate you from all other new acts coming out ?
I am not sure what is going to separate me from others but I am still working on it musically

FOS - How have you gone about developing your signature Chromaderma sound?
The chromaderma sound is going to be a mixture of various frequencies. Purely electronic music and not any specific style but yes a mixture of psy, drum and bass, Indian classical.

I want to make music everybody can relate to and not just specific clan or group of people.

FOS - Are there any particular artists you’ve really enjoyed working with?
Ma faiza, Prasad Ruparel, Goa bwoy Nuh

FOS - You’re part of a new generation of Djs, full of energy and fresh sounds. What do you think about being part this lineage?
I think things have changed now, everything is digital, technology is improved. It is no big deal to make music in today’s world with the help of computers etc. I am glad to be a part of it

FOS - What can we expect to see from you in 2012?
New original music and Gigs

FOS - Your DJing has taken you all over the country, what has been the most exciting destination for you so far?
Till now Nepal , Goa and Kasol

FOS - Does the audience response overwhelm you? How do you react to such situation?

Yes, audience response is very imp as that decides whether they are enjoying my music or not , also that way I can decide what I am suppose to play and when.

FOS - How do you find the Indian crowd, and do you think EDM scene has changed in the past 5 years?
Indian crowd is getting better, and yes things have changed in the last 5 years, I have been looking at the scene since the 90’s and the way I see it now is completely different. Indians are now open to electronic music and there are lot of domestic artist coming up with new music which I think is amazing

Chromaderma :

Few years ago, in a music-oriented household that drew from contrasts between Classical & Commercial Film music, Rohit Ballal decided to break the codes of grey, only to paint his passion for Electronica in colors of the highest degree. Soon followed his affiliation with beautiful hues as he blend with utmost versatility – Drum & Bass, Asian Underground, Indian Fusion, Chill out & Psytrance.

Perhaps then, the term ‘Chroma’ (meaning: intensity of color) redefined itself, almost consuming him and his passion. He realized the magical powers of music to overlook worldly differences and penetrate through people’s skins to touch them deep within. Mesmerized by the beauty of it all, Rohit Ballal, who sooner came to be known as Chromaderma (derma: meaning skin), ventured into this magical journey that continues to inspire until this day, not just people around him but him within.

“The fact that music disconnects us from this material world and fills us up with a world of beauty, joy and happiness, where music is the only language, inspires me the most”, he says. However, Music isn’t the only passion for Rohit. His quest for mastering the art of ink ( Tattoo ) runs further deep. Much as his Love for painting, or creating marvels in graphic-design.A yoga fanatic by morning and a voracious reader by night, Rohit now wants to take production to a whole new level to create his own sounds, that will heal and spread vibrations of love!
